Retro Black & White

The Atlantic recently did a 20 part retrospective called World War II in Photos. If you haven't seen it already, I highly recommend taking the time to view it. They have some incredibly powerful photos. Anyways, I wanted to try and re-create the look of some of those images... and these are a few of my attempts. I think the black and white effect along with a high contrast makes for more dramatic images.

A Boy and His Balloon

Thinking back to my childhood, I remember how awesomely amazing I thought balloons were. I'm not quite sure what made them so remarkable (is it because they're colorful and can fly?)... but if you ever want to make a child smile, just give them a balloon. Here's a couple kids that seem pretty stoked.

Summertime in Boston II

Can anyone find Waldo??... some additional pictures from Frog Pond in Boston. It's hard to imagine that in 3 months this will turn into an ice skating rink.

A midsummer day at JFK park in Cambridge.
I messed around a bit in photoshop to create this analog/retro effect. I thought it came out pretty cool.

A Midsummer Day in the Park (part II).
I really liked the halo effect that was created around the baby geese.

Rice fields of Ubud.

Another retro/analog looking picture I made using photoshop. I wanted to create a "Polaroid-like" effect from my digital image. I think it came out pretty cool.

The before image is below.

Red Cactus in Sint Maarten.

My attempt at creating a "Polaroid-like" image... retro, analog, and a bit over-exposed. I'm not exactly sure why I wanted to do this (especially with an image taken by an expensive SLR camera). I guess I got sick of looking at perfectly crisp/clear photographs. Anyways, I think it came out kind of cool.

Sepia toned dream.

This is a lake in Zhaoqing, China. I tried to give this photograph a mixture of modern and retro. You can see vivid details of the white rock in foreground, but then I blurred out details in background... making it look a bit like an old painting. Anyways, I thought it came out pretty cool.
